IP Assignment and Licensing

What is IP Licensing

IP licenses enable the owner of that property to grant others the permission to use the IP, whist still retaining ultimate control and ownership. They are useful as it enables the owner to maintain control over the use of their property but also capitalise from its use in the form of revenue.  An IP licensing agreement can broaden the reach of your IP with less risk to the owner than if they were to embark on that business front themselves.

What can be Licensed

  • Patents
  • Designs
  • Trademarks
  • Copyrights

What is IP Assignment

IP assignment is similar to licenses in the sense that you are granting another the right to use your intellectual property. However, in an assignment, you transfer your right to another absolutely and give up your rights in that property.  You may need to consider entering an IP assignment agreement on an asset sale of a business.

Assignment of IP Rights

Our team have expertise in the many laws and different rights that exist when it comes to IP and will work with you and other professionals in creating and protecting your IP rights, and advising you in connection with the exploitation of your intellectual property.

If you would like to discuss the possibility of exploiting the use of your intellectual property and for advice on whether a license or assignment may be the most suitable, please contact a member of our corporate team.
