New Priority Service for British citizenship applications: Faster decisions now available

The Home Office has introduced a new Priority Service for British citizenship applications, allowing eligible applicants to receive a decision on their naturalisation or registration application in around 30 working days, rather than waiting the standard processing time of up to six months. The service became available from 6 July 2026 and is designed to provide a faster option for applicants who require a decision more quickly.
What is the new British citizenship Priority Service?
Applicants submitting eligible British citizenship applications can now choose a Priority Service by paying an additional £500 on top of the standard Home Office application fee. Where an application is straightforward and no further enquiries are required, the Home Office aims to make a decision within 30 working days after biometrics have been enrolled.
As with other Home Office priority services, the faster processing option does not guarantee that an application will be successful. Applicants must still satisfy all of the statutory requirements for British citizenship.
Who can benefit?
The new service may be particularly attractive to applicants who:
- Need British citizenship urgently for work or international travel.
- Require a British passport within a shorter timeframe.
- Wish to secure citizenship before relocating overseas.
- Want greater certainty for personal or family reasons.
Although the Home Office aims to process eligible applications within 30 working days, more complex applications may still take longer where further checks are necessary.
The new Priority Service became available from 6 July 2026 and is designed to provide a faster option for applicants who require a decision more quickly.
Eligibility remains unchanged
The introduction of a priority service does not alter the legal requirements for becoming a British citizen.
Applicants must continue to demonstrate that they:
- Meet the residence requirements.
- Have complied with the permitted absence limits.
- Hold the required immigration status.
- Meet the English language requirement where applicable.
- Have passed the Life in the UK Test.
- Satisfy the Home Office’s good character requirement.
Submitting a well-prepared application remains essential, as requests for additional evidence can delay a decision even where the Priority Service has been selected.
Is the Priority Service worth it?
For many applicants, paying an additional fee to receive a decision within approximately six weeks may represent excellent value, particularly where citizenship is needed to support employment, business opportunities, travel plans or family commitments.
However, applicants should remember that the Priority Service accelerates the decision-making process only. Following approval, applicants must still attend a citizenship ceremony before they officially become British citizens and can apply for their first British passport.
